Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is an aged Venezuelan rum at 40% ABV, produced by Destilerías Unidas and aged in small oak casks. It is one of the reference bottles for the rich, sweeter South American style of rum.
The profile is deep and dessert-like: dark chocolate, toffee, dried fruit and orange peel, with a full, almost syrupy body and a long finish. It is a long way from a light mixing rum. If you have drunk only white and spiced rum, this will not taste like the same category.
It belongs in a glass rather than a cocktail shaker. Neat in a sipping glass is the intended use, or over one large ice cube if you want it slightly opened up. It also works genuinely well after dinner in place of a dessert wine or a brandy, and alongside dark chocolate or coffee.
