Heineken is a Dutch pale lager brewed at 5.0% ABV and sold in its familiar green bottle. What separates it from other international lagers is its yeast: Heineken's A-yeast strain has been used by the brewery since the 1800s and is responsible for the light fruit note that sits behind the malt.

Compared with the lightest lagers on the shelf, Heineken carries more hop bitterness. That gives it a firmer, drier finish and a bit more grip, so it holds its own next to food with some salt and fat behind it. It is still a clean, straightforward lager rather than a hop-forward beer, and it is best judged cold.
