Jose Cuervo Especial Silver is the clear counterpart to the better-known gold bottling. Like the gold, it is a mixto at 40% ABV — blue agave blended with other sugars rather than 100% agave — but without the colour and caramel character of the gold expression.

That makes it the lighter and cleaner of the two: light agave, citrus, mild pepper and a clean finish. It is less sweet than the gold, which is usually an advantage once lime and syrup are involved, because you have more control over how sweet the finished drink ends up.

This is a mixing bottle, plainly. It belongs in margaritas, Palomas and tequila-and-soda for a group, where cost per drink matters and the tequila is one component rather than the subject. For sipping neat, a 100% agave blanco is the better use of your money.
