Maker's Mark is a Kentucky straight bourbon from Loretto, Kentucky, bottled at 45% ABV. Its defining feature is the mash bill: it is a wheated bourbon, using soft red winter wheat where most bourbons use rye as the flavouring grain.
That swap changes the whole character. Rye brings pepper and spice; wheat brings softness and a bready sweetness. So Maker's Mark tastes of vanilla, caramel and soft baked bread with gentle oak, rather than the sharp spice of a rye-forward bourbon. At 45% it still has body and warmth — it is soft, not weak.
It is a good bourbon to drink neat or over ice if you dislike aggressive whiskey, and it makes an excellent old fashioned, where the wheat sweetness carries the sugar and bitters without needing much help. A mint julep works well for the same reason.
